Microsoft bans China-based employees from using Android devices for work, mandates switch to iPhones

What just happened? Microsoft has told all its employees in China that they will soon only be allowed to use iPhones for work purposes. The ban on Android devices is part of a security-related Microsoft initiative for providing a unified way of managing and verifying employee identities.

The mandate, set to come into effect in September 2024, was announced in an internal memo seen by Bloomberg News. It will require Microsoft's China-based workers to verify their identities when logging in to work computers or phones. The change is part of Microsoft's global Secure Future Initiative that is intended, among other things, to ensure that all staff use the Microsoft Authenticator password manager and Identity Pass app.

While Apple's iOS store is available in China, Google Play isn't. Local smartphone giants such as Huawei and Xiaomi operate their own platforms in the country, but Microsoft has chosen to block access from those companies' devices to its corporate resources because they lack Google's mobile services, reads the memo.

Any staff in the country using Android handsets, including those from Huawei or Xiaomi, will be provided with an iPhone 15, as a one-time purchase. The Redmond giant is designating collection points across China where employees can pick up their iPhones.

Microsoft is also introducing the iPhones-only rule in Hong Kong, despite the Google Play Store being available in the special administrative region of China.

Microsoft has been beefing up its cybersecurity recently following several embarrassing breaches. The company detected a nation-state attack against its corporate email network last year, identifying the likely culprit as Russian group Midnight Blizzard. The hackers had access to Microsoft's corporate network for a month, breaching some of the company's source code repositories and unspecified "internal systems."

In April, a government review of the attack on Microsoft's Exchange Online hosted email service by a China-linked group blasted the company for allowing a "cascade of security failures" that were preventable and should never have occurred. The report described Microsoft's security culture as "inadequate" and requiring an overhaul.

Apple and Microsoft have not commented on the report, but it's easy to imagine Apple welcoming the news, especially as China started banning iPhones from certain government offices last year, and sales of the devices in the Asian nation have slumped recently.

So in the end, they do not block android as is, but chinese phones. that's actually smart move given what country they are in.

Oh poor people they have to use that stupid crappy iphone
it doesn't even know such a basic thing as to be able to set when the phone turns on and when it turns off
It is 10 years behind android
so you can't even use it as an alarm clock if you don't keep it on all night
it doesn't even have a fingerprint reader
in the dark or with hat or with glasses or if you don't look there simply how to turn it on?
you place it in the car while driving so that you can't look directly at it etc...
I bought an iPhone 15, I took it back the next day, I was fighting until I got the money back , I tell him even if it's free, I don't need such crap

Yet another reason why I would NEVER own anything "APPLE"
Here in Serbia (Europe) the market ratio is approx 30% iPhone,70% Android devices.I personally have Motorola Moto G32 6/128GB,and as far as I know Motorola is now proprietary Lenovo...so China again 🤔

Gotta love the irony at play here. Microsoft requiring the use of Apple products instead of requiring their own(yes Microsoft Tablet's are a communication tool too!) or simply banning mobile devices at company facilities. Way to go Microsoft. Another bone-head move for the record books.

The article suggests it is not because iOS is superior to Android in security but rather they want to have one OS to secure and manage security health.
That's not the reason. They support Android in other countries. The issue is specifically because the official Google Play Store is blocked in China, which means that they cannot verify that users will have an official version of the Authenticator app. If they can't trust the Authenticator app, then the phone cannot be used for 2 factor authentication.

Banning mobile devices defeats the purpose. They want people to use their mobile devices for 2FA. They can't use a mobile device for 2FA if they can't confirm that the Authenticator app has not been tampered with.
This isn't a bone-headed decision. It's really the only thing they can do, to be able to operate a business relatively securely in China.

That's the joke. iOS gives full access to CCP government forces while android will protect the users
Android, in China, will not protect users, because they can't use the official Play Store. 3rd party app stores are a huge security risk, but unfortunately for people in China have no alternative if they use Android.
