Game Pass to receive another price hike as Microsoft reboots console offerings

What just happened? Microsoft's drastic changes to Xbox Game Pass are a clear attempt to push more Xbox customers onto its ultimate tier. Although the company is raising prices for all plans, the standard Xbox offering will receive an arguably significant downgrade. Starting later this year, console subscribers can only receive newly released games and EA Play through the Ultimate tier.

Starting Wednesday, new Xbox Game Pass subscribers can no longer select the mid-level console tier. Microsoft will replace it with a new "Standard" tier that removes launch-day titles later this year. Furthermore, the prices for all plans will increase on September 12.

Standard Game Pass will still include a rotating list of hundreds of Xbox games and member-only discounts, but day-one games and EA Play will become exclusive to the Ultimate and PC plans. Like Game Pass Core, which only provides access to 25 titles, the Standard tier will add online console multiplayer.

Outside of the price hikes, the Core, PC, and Ultimate subscriptions will remain unchanged. In the US, Core increases from $59.99 to $74.99 a year, PC jumps by only $2 from $9.99 to $11.99 a month, and Ultimate rises from $16.99 to $19.99 monthly. Whereas monthly Game Pass console subscriptions were $9.99 a month, Standard will replace it at $14.99. Microsoft also listed price changes for other regions.

Depending on user preferences, the PC clearly receives the better deal, with access to new releases and EA Play for a lower price than the standard console plan. Although the new tier's launch date remains unknown, it will miss a healthy schedule of 2024 Microsoft releases that includes Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Avowed, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

The decision is likely a response to slow growth in console subscriptions and the need to recoup the $69 billion Microsoft spent acquiring Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard. The company also recently brought the service's cloud version to Amazon's Fire TV sticks and is advertising to PC users aggressively.

Current console subscribers should hold onto their plans since they won't lose access to new releases as long as automatic billing remains enabled. Moreover, Game Pass Console codes are still usable.

However, Microsoft plans to tighten the maximum length of stacked subscriptions to 13 months starting September 18. Those who currently have time beyond that limit remain unaffected.

It's a natural business move to raise prices the moment you have a much better service than the competition.... Netflix is the perfect example of it in which they are far more successful now than when the service was cheaper.

Xbox with Call of Duty on Day 1 puts GamePass light years ahead PSPlus and their usual old game releases.

I pay for Game Pass for my kids and they haven't made use of the Xbox very much lately. They don't play Crap Of Doody games and the fact that after taxes it's $18 a month for something that is rarely used, I won't be paying $22 a month for something we're barely using. I'm dropping the game pass sub.

I don't find MS's platform to be a good one for using on the PC. I get constant errors if I try to download/install games from them and I have to jump through hoops to get the games to install.

Too much hassle for too much money. No thanks MS, you can keep your crap.

Can we say unsustainable growth?

Never used gamepass, I'd rather stick to a "traditional" digital store front like Steam or GoG where they get proper patches rolled out to their games.
For example: the gamepass version of Wreckfest is several versions outdated compared to Steam/epic/gog build, and is the only version that's not compatible with PC storefront cross play support or mod support.

That and it's not worth the cost to me having limited time to game now, I'm not going to pay monthly for a service I'll barely end up being to use, nor do I want to feel pressured by said paid service to play X amount of games before they roll off in favor of new ones.

Any software as a service is just a scam, and I will always go gog first to buy and download my games.
ms was heavily investing in gp and they went to the moment they need to start reaping the gains or close the service.

My Gamepass Ultimate subscription ends this month. I'm not renewing it.
I remember many people saying the same about Netflix.....and yet the service has gotten even more successful after multiple price hikes and sharing restrictions.

Once you have tasted GamePass Day 1 releases, you will realize that buying the games it will be far more expensive.

I wonder if gamers know that they dont have to get mad at or even deal with microsoft if they just bought their games outright?
Not if things go full digital. How do you buy your games for the Xbox if it's digital only? Yeah...that's what I thought, through Microsoft. You have to deal with them if you want to buy the game digitally.

Even if you get a physical copy of a game you still have to deal with them if that game requires online connectivity. The only games that do not require some kind of paid paywall to play online are free to play games; those are the only games you can play online on your Xbox without needing some kind of subscription.

As it is we don't own digital purchases anyway, we pay for a licence to use said content and that license can be revoked at any time for any reason, as well as the content of the purchase (in this case, games) able to be changed/altered (which that part does technically cover DLC being added, so isn't necessarily as negative as it sounds).

*May not apply in EU, I haven't followed how challenges to that above have played out there close enough

This is completely ridiculous. I am so angry. How dare Microsoft start to charge £14.99!!!!! a month in the UK for access to day one Microsoft owned studio releases and a back catalogue of games including popular third party games rotated in, and give access to EA Play!!! On PC AND console???!!! How dare they do this, charging less than the Netflix top tier in the UK!!! How dare they. THE GALL!!

Anyone would think people were taking advantage of the dirt cheap prices the last few years by stacking several Xbox live gold cards then paying £7.99 for a month of gamepass to convert it to Utimate, or £1 if you have an offer, working out less than £4 a month. But no, no one did that. Of course they didn’t.

How dare MS do this. How very dare they. Growly growly growl

I’ll probably never have gamepass - I wait until games I want is discounted, then I buy, on GoG if I can, Steam if I can’t.
Going back to a game ive not played for 10 years+ is something I do often, and the risk it won’t be available anymore is not something I can accept
