Take a chill pill: Smack talk is inevitable when it comes to online, multiplayer games but in most cases, it doesn't escalate beyond name calling. Occasionally, however, disputes spill over into the real world. This is one of those instances.

According to Nassau County court records, 20-year-old Edward Kang recently flew from New Jersey to Florida to attack an online foe with a real-world hammer. It is unclear how Kang obtained the address of his victim, another young man around the same age. The two were players of ArcheAge, an MMORPG that isn't long for this world.

Police say Kang told his mother he was going to visit a friend he had met online while gaming.

Officials say Kang flew to Jacksonville, Florida, last Thursday and Ubered to a hotel in the victim's hometown about 35 miles north. At some point, he popped into a hardware store and purchased a hammer and a flashlight.

Around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, police say, Kang entered the victim's home and attacked him with the hammer. A struggle ensued, and the victim's stepfather jumped in to help restrain Kang until police arrived on the scene.

The victim, identified as Zachary Dinh in an arrest report, was taken to a local hospital where he received staples for multiple non life-threatening head wounds. Kang, who described the victim as a "bad person online," reportedly asked police how much jail time he could expect for breaking and entering and assault. He has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and armed burglary with a mask. The nature of the online altercation that led to the attack was not disclosed.

"I would say Mr. Kang, it's going to be a long time before you play video games again," said Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper.

In late April, the ArcheAge team announced it would be closing its servers in Europe and North America effective June 27, 2024, due to a decline in active players. Giving the timing of the shutdown and the attack, it literally would have been water under the bridge had Kang remained calm for just one more week.

This has happened b4 in some other game right? Smne got stabbed in game and then grabbed a knife and stabbed back (or back-stabbed) his online backstabber.

"I'd like to backstab you in the face" - Unidentified Female Undead Rogue, WoW, ca. 2008.

This reminds me of the 17th Century feud between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojirō.

This doesn't look good for the Asian community staying in the US. There are already discriminations against them there.

Comments like this are oozing with racist undertones. First you assume he's "staying in the US" because he's Asian. Most likely he was born in the US and not just staying there. Second you seem to think that the action of one person of a certain race, Asian in this case, makes everyone from that race look bad. There are literally hundreds of white bad actors in the US who every single day stab, kill, assault, rape, etc. and somehow that doesn't make white people look bad. But if one Asian does something like this, well it looks bad for the entire Asian community? At the end of the day this was done by a stupid kid and his race makes no difference.

Seems to me you are the one making the assumptions and accusations.

What a missed opportunity for the sheriff to respond and say "You'll be here for a while, but the good news is you can still role play, however the character selection is limited to a prisoner."

It's all because of distance involved. I've been to enough LAN parties to have seen people losing their s**t completely over a Quake gib, throwing CRT monitors around, etc...

Young males and testosteron, a very bad combination. Good thing he bring to the fight only a hammer and not a gun. Race doesn't have a thing to do here, violence is. I hope he does some jail time, maybe the young blood will cool down.

There was a case with 2 Doom Players did something similar I think one guy actually ended up DEAD over it..RIP

Back in the 2000's I used to play WoW sometimes at an internet cafe and yes, like you mention, there was this one guy who went absolutely batsh*t b0nkers over uh, I believe he was playing DOTA.

Everytime he'd get killed online he would get up, start cursing and make rounds of the whole cafe while cursing continuously.

If throwing monitors and towers was an option I believe he'd absolutely do that, yes.

I'm sure Florida Man had it coming in more ways than just this, and New Jersey Man is ending up where he belongs.

I can't imagine being 20 years old with enough cash to fly on a whim.
Well, considering a one way flight from Newark to Jacksonville can be had for as little as $69, nice, the same price as buying a video game.

At least it wasnt a gun, that wouldve been boring and so very "Merica", the hammer makes the story.

its terrible yet also comical, this dudes rage lasted through a whole flight and then some, I would love to know what happened in game to trigger this.

Wait, YOU are defending a blatantly racist comment?
Sigh...I'm an Asian and it's already bad enough that Asians are discriminated against us. My first post is trying to say "Oh no, not another reason for them to continue this discrimination". Maybe some people need to read properly.

Yeah, and some people need to write properly. Be clear, cogent and concise and maybe people will understand you better. Just a thought.
